What is Engaged Encounter?

Engaged Encounter is part of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Movement, which is active in almost 100 countries.

An Engaged Encounter weekend is a form of marriage preparation. It is designed to give couples preparing for marriage the chance to talk openly about their expectations and attitudes in such areas as work, money, children, in-laws, sex, leisure time, church and so on.

The focus of the weekend is on growth in relationships through communication as a couple.

  • It is not a retreat and there are no group discussions.

The weekend begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and finishes around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Is it only for Catholics?

No! Although the weekend is presented by three Catholic married couples and a Catholic priest, many people who are not Catholic have experienced a weekend and have told us how valuable it was for their relationship.

What happens on the Weekend?

The Weekend is divided into a number of short sessions. Each session begins with a presentation by one of the couples and the priest, in which they talk about their own experiences of marriage.

After this, the couples are invited to reflect on a question and to write about their reaction to what has been said. Then they share their views with each other. This "working time" is private between the couple throughout the weekend. The only time everyone is asked to speak out loud is to introduce themselves on the Friday evening.

An Engaged Encounter weekend will give you precious time together, away from all the distractions of the wedding preparations - a time for each other.

How much does a Weekend cost?

There is a booking fee of £50 per couple.

You will be told the actual cost of your weekend before you leave, as different centres charge slightly different rates, and you will be asked to give as generously as you can towards this.

However, the most important thing is that everyone should have the chance to experience one of these weekends, irrespective of their ability to pay. No-one is ever turned away because they can't afford it.
